Michael sends us this about the Norwood Invaders Cycle Speedway team that used to race round Norwood lakes – we’ll be including this information on our Norwood Lakes Tour:
Hi, it must have been late 1950’s the track was on a slope just behind some trees on the north side of the lake, a bit waste groundish in those days. The team must have folded by 1965 as that’s when I joined Beckenham Monarchs and the Norwood team wasn’t going then. I seem to recall having a powered boat trip on the lake but I must have been a toddler, I was born in 1949. As a family we used to walk from Woodside Green to the lakes, calling in on my Gran in Howard Road on the way, on some Sundays and watch the sailing boats and people fishing and we sat somewhere having an ice-cream.
I fished in the lakes as a child too, it was rumoured their was a giant pike in the lake and we used to look along the lake edges to see if we could spot it. Saw one once but it wasn’t very big, the giant was probably a fisherman’s tale.
