On November 23rd 1872 over 800 people gathered in Portland Road to watch SOUTH NORWOOD FC take on WINDSOR HOME PARK in the second round of the FA Cup. It was only the second year of the competition and South Norwood were one of 16 teams to enter – featuring their star brothers ROBERT and JAMES SMITH whoplayed for QUEENS PARK in Scotland but moonlighted for SOUTH NORWOOD when working in London. South Norwood won 1-0 but after a complaint from Windsor the game was declared void and a replay ordered at Windsor which the home team won 3-0. This injustice must be avengedand 23rd November this year is the 140th anniversary of the game played in PoRTLAND ROAD. We are not certain where the ground was but think it was around the then unbuilt Dundee Road area. We will be talking to the TRAMS about a re-enactment at the Arena. If you have any info on South Norwood FC please gt in touch.
