If you see a very stylish geezer about Portland Road it could well be boxer LARRY PAUL who is now living in South Norwood. Larry is avery affable bloke and had a distinguished boxing carrer including fight with Alan Minter and Maurice Hope. You can catch his fight with Jimmy Batten on you tube. We are intending to ask Larry if he’ll give atalk about hisfight days….could be a knockout.

i no larry personaly and if you wish to contact him please leave a message on this email address and larry will get back to.
Hello JoJo. I worked for Larry in the 1980’s and often cast my mind back to some happy times. I have not spoken to him for 26 years so would love if you could pass on my very best wishes to an old friend. I thought a lot of him and would appreciate if you could tell him that I have posted my own thread below yours on this site.
With kindest regards
Steve McGouldrick

Hello jojo. Went to see Larry yesterday, he’s in a very bad way in hospital. & I need to let his son & daughter know. Please reply if you can help. Joe gunstone. On. 07886416872. Thank you.
Hi joe saw message about Larry beķng poorly, it really shocked me. Had a really good relationship with him in late 60s he has always been in my heart. Just thought i would ask how he is .send him my love and best wishes and let me know how he is getting on .regards Linda nee prescott xxx
I worked with Larry in 1985 at the Berni Inn at Norbury. Larry took me under his wing and I will never forget one incident. I was new in London having moved down from Scotland that year. On the day of my 21st, Larry carcked open some buubly…just me, him and his partner Linda (the then manager). He got me blasted like never before. I attended Larry and Linda’s wedding with my then girlfriend Lucy Whitehouse but moved on from that job. I lost touch with Larry in 1988, I thought a lot of Larry, he was a bloody good laugh and always kept an eye out for his employees. We had lots of lock ins and shared a lot of laughs. Now I am back in Scotland and married with children, step children as well as grandchildren. I would love to hear from Larry, if even just to say hello. I would like to pass on my very best wishes to Larry and hope he remembers me. He was always taking off my Scottish accent as well as many of the regulars in the pub, always in good spirits. If you are reading this Larry, fire me off an email mate.
All the very best to an old friend.
Steve McGouldrick
What’s your email address? I’m with larry now 😉
Hi kate

Please can you pass on this email address to Larry if he would like to speak to Kevin,14/8/74 thank you.
Further to my previous post about my old friend Larry Paul; if anyone reading this was a regular in the Berni Inn, Streatham High Rd, Norbury between May 1985 and November 1985 get in touch please. I was a barman in both the bottom & top bar as well as a waiter and grill chef. A few names from then are Joe and Julie, Beverley, Kay (waitress), Debbie Smith (barmaid), Lucy Whitehouse (regular & ex-girlfriend, Alistair (barman, New Zealand Michael (barman) and Delroy. If I missed anyone out, sorry. If you don’t remember me, I was tall and lean, brown hair, very Scottish and liked a drink then. I was only 21 then but now 48. Married twice with 7 kids, 4 step kids and 3 grand kids.
These were great days. A hot summer, the bar was always rammed at the weekend. Many a night spent in lock ins with Larry Paul. Think these were actually the best times of my younger life.
Oh and the Berni used to be called the King George the Fourth I believe.
I worked as the grill chef for a while, under a foreign guy called Tony. A right nutter but a good bloke. Worked in the top bar under Claude who used to fiddle the stock and pocket the money.
Larry was a mean impressionist, taking off everyone with a prop pair of glasses always at the ready. Especially when taking off this Asian guy who used to ask for a pint of Holsten in a funny old way.
On the weekend, some of the waiteresses and me would go to Hollywoods in Streatham for late night drinkies. I met Debbie while working there. Her bloke had previously saved Larry’s life and we “carried on” for a while but it never went beyond a fond kiss. We stayed friends until she disappeared with her kids Mark and Madeleine around 1990. God I would love to hear from her!
The Berni was never the same after Larrry and Linda left in 1985. I got sacked by the manager after a fallout and went to work in the Manor Arms in Streatham, another great pub.
Anyway before I sign off, the highlight of that summer and the next 18 months was Lucy Whitehouse (Debbie her friend with the braces are you about)? I stood her up on our first date, got on one knee outside the Berni to beg forgiveness. Would love to hear from you.
Post a reply Larry will you. I’ve not stayed in touch with anyone since these times and it would be nice to reminisce. I moved back to Dundee in 1996 & now live in Forfar, Angus.

Hiya,
I’ve just stumbled across this page by pure chance.
I’ve tried looking for a way of contacting Larry a few of times before on behalf of my dad. my name is Paul Carrotte, Larry used to work with my dad, Ian, a good few years back perhaps 20 years ago or more in the Croydon area. He’s wanted to try and get back in touch for some time for a catch up but hasn’t been able to find any contact details for him.
I just thought I’d drop Larry a line on his behalf and unbeknown to him and see if Larry might fancy catching up with my old man by email/phone or whatever suits. I’ve heard a lot about Larry but I was probably only about 2 years old when I last actually met him! The name Carrotte usually sticks in peoples minds! : ).
Hopefully hear back soon! Cheers. Paul.

Larry got me an interview for a job at The Alderman in Kennington as part of a joke he was trying to play on the landlady. The landlady was looking for barmaids, Larry answered the phone to me and gave me an appointment for an interview. Landlady surprised when I pitched up as I’m a bloke. Funnily enough, got the job and stayed there for two years until I moved abroad.
Met Larry plenty of times over the next couple of years. Smashing bloke. Remember his wedding reception in late 1989 or early 1990.
Hope he’s still doing well.
Hello Barry. I too was at Larry’s wedding reception in 1989. I have been trying for a while now to catch up with old friends. I think I remember you, although it’s a while back now. If you get this, would you be up for getting in touch with me? It’s a very sad time now Larry has passed so it would be nice to swap stories about this lovely man. Steve stevepowrie@gmail.com
Eric ragonesi,

He should visit Shrewsbury some time. If Larry can get in touch that would be great. Have a great Christmas larry. Eric
i met Larry in a pub in London – Mawbey Arms and went to see him fight in a charity match in the West End around 1988. My father had pub at time. Watching boxing tonight and he came to my mind. i was only 17 at the time but stuck in my mind, very charismatic!

I’m a good friend of Larry Paul and he said thanks for that lovely comment and he would love to talk about his fighting days if he had the chance to. Thanks from Larry Paul 👊
If you give Ian a call on 07708 411409, we can get something set up at our new local The Portland Arms (hopefully). We’ll ensure Larry has a fair few drinks for his trouble but we don’t have any money to pay anyone. I know lots of the community would love to hear Larry talk.
Hi Larrys friends , just heard Larrys in bad way in hospital, his daughter has been by his side so I’m told. Hopefully his son will hear news and get to see him. I can not say a lot. Let’s hope he can make a great recovery. He’s a fighter.
just to say that Larry died yesterday. His daughter Charlie was by his side .
RIP
Xxx

Wonderful site you have here but I was wanting to know if you knew of any community forums
that cover the same topics talked about in this article? I’d
really like to be a part of group where I can get opinions
from other knowledgeable individuals that share the same interest.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Cheers!
