What a great day in prospect for South Norwood and many congratulations to PEOPLE FOR PORTLAND ROAD for their efforts to bring this great day about: Here’s the details from Heather Hardie at PPR:
Historical plaque unveling – an invitation
Almost 100 years ago, following much public campaigning and debate, the world’s first ever reinforced concrete tunnel was opened running beneath Norwood Junction Station. It was designed by Croydon’s Borough Engineer. The event was marked by an official opening by the Mayor and attended by the whole Council. To celebrate our history and the inventiveness of Croydon and South Norwood, People for Portland Road are erecting commemorative plaques at both ends of the tunnel. We are delighted that the current Mayor has agreed to follow his predecessor and unveil them at a ceremony on Tuesday 31st July at 3pm celebrating its 100th anniversary.
On behalf of PPR I am delighted to invite you to the unveiling ceremony. We’ll be meeting at the Clifford Road end of the underpass.
