Lying between the two doctor’s surgeries and Fishers Chemists on Enmore road is this unique and ancinet electricity substation. How strange that the DANGER OF DEATH sign should appear where works the greatest concentration of health professionals in the area? A daily reminder of our mortality as we head into the doctors? What fiendish mind could have conjoured such a juxtaposition?
The building itself on two floors – extremely rare – looks like a Minoan minaret guarding the entrance to Heraklion harbour.Fancifuuly you can muse on a MOORISH INFLUENCE though the Electric Board might be a better bet.Two doors with no access face onto Enmore road. What lies behind? What does the building signify? Has anyone seen anyone enter or leave? Presumably it must still serve some purpose or it would have been demolished when the surgeries were built?
One of our most interesting buildings. Anyone shed any light on it?
