Hi there…enjoying the site, as a long-time Snorewood denizen…although don’t you think South Norwood Organisation for Tourism makes for a better acronym?
Anyhow, just finished re-reading ‘A British Picture’ the autobiography of legendary film maker Ken Russell, in which he talks about (chapter 2, page 18) walking “down South Norwood Hill” then taking a train from “South Norwood to Victoria” en route to meeting Huw Wheldon and landing the job on BBC’s Monitor programme. This must have been circa 1959-60. Elsewhere in the book there are references to him struggling to maintain a “large ramshackle Victorian house” so I’m guessing he had one of the big townhouses at the top of South Norwood Hill towards Beulah Hill.
So there’s another genius started out in SE25. Oh yes, I can confirm the Cutting Crew – 80s hair rockers famed for ‘I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight’ had strong South Norwood links. Guitarist Kevin MacMichael (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_MacMichael) lived in a cottage in Coventry Road for many years. A native Canadian he died a few years ago in Halifax Nova Scotia. However, he did play with Robert Plant on the Fate Of Nations LP so there’s a connection for your Led Zep walk.
Hope this is useful. Loving your work and more power to your elbow!
Cheers, Howard Lake
Seems you have three Lakes now
I think its lovely what you are doing, but we are making you aware that we have been trying to do this on the forgotten portland road, over numerous years fly tipping ,people using the place a public toilet (people urinating and pooing) behind peoples homes ,no one seems to care or is willing to help ,so perhaps rather than a few benches help us clear up Portland Road .
We do, and People for Portland Road (which we are all members) do a wonderful job – we support them every way we can.
Lets Unite and do this again. Blessed wishes all from James Collins All Gardening Services South Norwood. JC :o)
Where can you buy postcards of South Norwood? The tourist office at East Croydon didn’t have any of Croydon let alone any of the wonderful hinterland of South Norwood.
I am not a native of South Norwood , but one of a small town Called Stamford in Lincolnshire. But might I say that what has been done at the top of our high street is nothing short of fantastic. As a kid I was and still am a massive fan of the good Captain himself, infact we used to love listening to what a day on an old c90 cassette . Makes the wording to me along the fence even more meaningful to me., Please let me know how i can get inolved with the mproject as I did ask the two artists yesterday , but never made it down to see the boss as it where.
Kind regards
Jay
I have lived in S Norwood for 8 yrs now I simply can’t believe you have been so stupid as to rename Norwood Junction ‘Norwood Intergalactic’, we will be the laughing stock of London! Mick Shepherd
