Some places are worth visiting at special times of the year and today’s choice is ASHBURTON GRID off Tennyson Road. This is the most dangerous place in South Norwood judging by the over 38 bright yellow ‘DANGER OF DEATH’ signs that decorate the impregnable fencing. However look within and you will see not just a huge electricity substation but banks of grass festooned with thousands of bright yellow dandelions. Curiously the yellow of the dandelions matches exactly the yellow of the ‘danger of death ‘ signs creating a blissful if unexpected vista of yellow and green. Catch now before the mowermen arrive. Combine the trip by walking a few yards on to Brickfields Lake which this morning resembled a Wind in the Willows sleepy backwater with a few somnolent fishermen passing the time away like rat and mole.
One of our future walks will be unique – we will be visiting over 20 ‘DANGER OF DEATH’ sites in South Norwood. Most will be electricity sub-stations but others will be gas and sewage works. We will then produce a map linking the danger sites like ley lines to see if any mysterious forces are at work. We need your help to identify all these sites – they all have the yellow ‘danger of death signs’ on them with a lightning strike – so if you know of any let us know in the comments section. We will have a date soon for what is set to be one of London’s most talked about perambulations…..starting at Brickfields Meadow and finishing…..who knows!………maybe not finishing.
Great idea for ‘a walk in danger’. I look forward to it
