As our contribution to the Croydon Heritage festival we will be hosting an early evening walk round South Norwood Lake. Places of interest will be the cricket pavilion where Conan Doyle played for Norwood including his playing record and a chance to sit on the grand verandah/ the tennis courts where Bunny Austin first played/ the visit to the lake of the Czar in 1903/ the pneumatic railway/ all aboard the skylark/ Mike the giant pike/the Norwood cycle speedway team/ the sailing club/the Croydon canal and railway and much more.
Its an easy flat walk suitable for buggies and wheelchairs.
Also we will be having a stall on June 8th at the grand Croydon heritage opening day – so pop along and see us.
Would love to join this walk and find out more about the area. Unfortunately I cannot make that date but I would be interested in anything which ends up in print. In my childhood I would walk to the lakes with my parents, especially on a sunny Sunday afternoon and watch the anglers and sailors. My father was born in and still lives in the area, in a care home now, but I sometimes fear his memories are getting a bit mixed. I am sure I read somewhere about another pneumatic railway but cannot recall any details.
Good luck with the project; the area deserves to be better known than it is.
